Negotiation Strategies

I think submissiveness in negotiating is part of why women suffer a pay gap. This article is good, but I don't think it's very specific. I'd add:

* Research your field to know the going rate
* Ask for more up front (it's easier to start with an extra $5K than to get a raise)
* Know bonuses, days off, and other things are also negotiable
* My favorite phrase, "I would feel more comfortable with ____" because it doesn't say I won't take the job if you don't give me more, it says simply, I'd prefer more. And it does so in a non-attacking way.

I employed these strategies upon getting an offer at my new job. Ultimately, I got an increase of $3,000, which doesn't seem like much for a yearly salary, but that's $3K *every year* and more than a typical merit increase. If you break it down, it's $250/month (pre-tax) which covers almost a week of daycare.
