I don't live in NYC and I am by no means super religious, but it amazes me there are people out there willing to shell out this kind of money just to participate. In Atlanta, there are neighborhoods, walking distance from synagogues, whose modest homes are disproportionately priced for their location. In the meantime, I'm just trying to find a shut to take my kids to Sunday School!
