Obviously I care a lot about differences in pay based on gender, as well as the United States' complete and utter disregard for family (demonstrated by the lack of paid parental leave to over 90% of Americans). This article has nothing to do with parental leave per se, though she uses as an example how taking time off will harm a career path.
In my personal opinion, there are two reasons women aren't paid equally:
1) Women hesitate to negotiate. This can be remedied by teaching, and reminding women not to be pacifists.
2) The crux of this article: caretakers (usually women) are penalized. Whether this means leaving on time to get to daycare (no overtime), taking an extra day off now and again, or refusing to put in extra hours in off hours, it all goes back to expectations that are not realistic, and work that is not valued. Oh, and the lack of available affordable childcare and adult care!
